Who is Jesus Christ?

Perhaps at one time or another you may have encountered this name. If you've been reared up in a Christian home, then you've heard of, read, sung and even talked about Him in your home and in your church. Christians acknowledged Jesus as the Son of God who became the Son of Man in order to provide redemption from sin and hell to a fallen humanity. Jesus is the One whose birth we celebrate on Christmas day, whose death we commemorate on Good Friday and whose resurrection we rejoice in on Easter Sunday. He also is the One we await for He has promised that He will return to take believers to be with Him and then to rule over this world as King of kings and Lord of lords.

Jesus is the One we, as a church, worship and adore. He is our Savior, our Shepherd, our Strength, our All in all. We admit that apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15: 5). He is the Head of the Church (Colossians 1:17) which He loved and redeemed by His precious blood. Today, He "makes her holy, cleansing her by the washing of water by the Word" (Ephesians 5:26). Because of what He has done for us, we've come to love Him, live for Him and submit ourselves to Him "so that in everything He might have the supremacy" (Colossians:18).

However, if your background is anything but Christian, then the name may mean nothing to you. To some, Jesus Christ is but a word used for swearing or cursing. To a few, Jesus is but a name like any other with nothing special attached to it. But to many (and there are billions of them all over the world), Jesus is an unknown quantity. A pastor friend of mine was in Japan for a training in evangelism. While riding in a train, he asked a Japanese seatmate if he knew Jesus. The Japanese looked at my friend and asked, "Who is he? Is he a Filipino?" Even in a city like Toronto, where churches galore exist, there are millions who are as ignorant as that Japanese as to who Jesus is.

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
— John 14:6

And so, as a church, we exist to make Jesus known. We have been given the Great Commission to make disciples of all nations - here and abroad. Through lip and life, we proclaim that Jesus alone is" the Way, the Truth and the Life" (John 14:6). Jesus alone is "the Name given to men by which they must be saved" (Acts 4:12). When man responds by putting his faith in Jesus, he will be forgiven, cleansed from his sins and welcomed as a child into God's family (John 1:12). As he grows in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ through Bible study, prayer and other spiritual exercises, maturity ensues. The believer will then desire to follow the Lord's will in his life and by the Holy Spirit's enabling power, will become a lifelong disciple of Jesus. His desire is to "love the Lord with all his heart, soul and mind" and then to "love his neighbour as himself" (Matthew 22:36,37).

This then is the mandate and mission of CABC. Our prayer is that through our witness many more will have their eyes opened to the glory and wonder of Jesus Christ, the only Saviour and soon coming Lord and King.
